Otley Carnival 15th June 2013
Uriah Heep with Mr Brownlow (alias James Blackie and yours truly) and Lion Vice-president Stevie, float almost complete. Jungle Book characters. Lion Patrick and Gillie from the Wizard of Oz. Yours truly as a Dicken's character or maybe even Charles himself? Count Dracula (not usually seen in daylight!). The Lion, the official Lion's photographer in stovepipe hat and the Tin Man. The Fat Controller with his wife and (part of) family. Lion meets the children. The float as presented for judging (Councillor Nigel Francis asked if James was a snowflake but we all know he was Doctor Crippen). Scout John Morgan snaps Lion and friend. Waiting to set off. Snapping the snapper. Setting off. Note the darkening clouds. We didn't know what was about to hit us! A deluge but the carnival must continue. The question is - will this float float? As our float decorations begin to disintegrate before our eyes the Lion and the Bear look decidedly bedraggled. It was a good job we packed the brollies. Waving to the throngs packing the roadside despite the deluge. The rain soon clears fortunately. A wave from the bookshop as we pass. Passing by the Old Grammar School. An interesting confrontation! Crossing the river near to the carnival field. Arriving at the carnival field. Otley Lions Float "Bringing Books to Life" wins first prize in the class 1 category. Accepting the trophy and certificate. Posing with the trophy and certificate. Me and Phil or is it Phil and I? ... and finally - flipping eggs. The trophy. Transporting the bookshop sign board. Taking down the bunting and that's it. Finished.
